ISA NorCal Board Meeting Minutes

January 15, 2003

Meeting held at Power Engineers in Pt. Richmond, CA and called to order at 5:46 pm. PDT.  

Financial Report

Board meetings and dinner meetings had negative cash flow, balanced by positive cash flow from the Transmitter revenues. Membership remains steady at around 900 members, which includes members from Sierra Nevada and  Santa Clara sections.  Checking, Savings and Scholarship accounts were reviewed and discussed – status is good on all accounts. Terry to get documentation for year 2001-2002 to accountant by February 15.  

Training Courses

CSE PE Review Classes

  No report.

CLCPE

Terry to send check  to John Quierdo for the Norcal’s share of the CLCPE annual dues.  

CCST Review Classes

The  CCST review classes for March 2003 are being advertised and 8 persons have signed up so far.  Facility for these review classes will be at the IBEW Local 340 Apprentice Center in Sacramento. The final exam will be conducted in Sacramento in April and lasts ½ day – need proctor. If get enough demand, will run a 2nd exam at the Maritime Academy in Vallejo a month later.  Bob Webb suggested doing a mass mailing to members on these classes soon. ISA materials for this exam should be modified to better educate the students. Bob Hammaker to e-mail last years roster to see what areas need to be strengthened in preparation for the CCST exams.  Due to monetary reasons, IBEW has asked now teach the course with their own instructors.  Norcal ISA will give them the materials in the form of powerpoint presentations and manuals. There will be no ISA logos on the materials.  After further discussion, the board feels that since it is a ISA-endorsed class, that ISA instructors should teach. Terry to talk to IBEW further on issue.   

Safety Systems Course

Safety Systems Course is set for January 18, 2003 to be taught by Ed Marszel at the Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA. Class so far has 8-10 persons signed up so far.

 

Industrial Ethernet

Advertise for an Ethernet on the Factory Floor course for March taught by the ISA instructor. Bob Webb to talk to ISA HQ to check on availability and cost – may run $300/person. Bob can teach the security portion of the class if needed.   Bob Hammaker indicates the facility at the Maritime Academy in Vallejo is available for the course.

Discussed possibility of Wireless Technology seminar or DCS roundtable seminar for April. Other classes for Feb-April 2003 could include another VFD course and an Advanced Feildbus course.   

2002-2003 Programs

January 21, 2003  Tour of recent project work at Ora Loma Sanitary District in San Leandro with on-your-own dinner at Guatemalan restaurant afterwards.  

The $20 deposit for meeting reservation will be refunded when persons shows at the tour.  Sodas and cheese prior to tour. 

February 18, 2003  - East Bay MUD new SCADA system in Alameda, CA near Jack London square.  On your own dinner afterwards with suggestion of Scott’s, Kincaid’s or Tony Roma’s.  Herb to see if SCADA vendor is available to discuss also with EBMUD on the new SCADA system.

March 18,  2003   – Joint meeting with San Francisco State University student section with Golden Pacific Brewing Tour of the brewery process and a short program for the students on the benefits of ISA and specifically ISAjobs.com. Dinner to be catered afterwards at the brewery at $20 members and $10 for students

April 15, 2003 – Tour of Herguth Labs in Vallejo, an Oil Analysis facility which does studies on greases. Tour takes about an hour. Herb to talk with Bill Herguth to finalize.

May 2003   - Panel discussion on Fieldbus. Jim Noel to gather speakers.

Panel member suggestions include Tesoro , ABB, APC, Chevron, and Allen-Bradley also some of Paul Mahoney’s customers. Can use Maritime Academy for $25/room and can have food catered in.

June 2003   - Chocolate factory tour at Scharffenberger - may be better off scheduled for May, before Mother’s Day. Maqy want to switch with Fieldbus program.

Roster’s and Buyer’ Guide

No report in Jan., however last info was as follows:

Brad needs to talk to Glen on website issues and pricing for the project and pull together database. Glen to track down someone for website development. Herb suggested the company Compassionate PC, contact Bob Hawkenburger.

 

Honors and Awards

Tony has the forms on the awards that we can honor with a March 1st deadline for the nominations. Golden Achievement Award – Norcal ISA to nominate Bob Webb for this award. Board would like to nominate Terry Molloy as Section Secretary/President Elect with a 1-3-03 deadline. Since there is no district officials eligible, the board recommends that Glen Garfein as Past President as well as his other qualifications, should  be alternate nominator for the district. Board moves carries and passes that Glen should be alternate nominator. Bob and Tony to solicite Norcal Vice-president, program chair assistant, program chair in Sacramento, treasurer and membership chair. 

South Bay Planning Meetings

Scheduled to have 6 South Bay meetings in the next year at the Palo Alto Community Center – last night meeting on Security Conference – only 6 people attended.  Next is Feb. 11 on SCADA systems. At 5:30 pm. At the Mitchell park Community Center in PA.

Action Items for Next Month
