Several years ago the Northern
California Section of ISA received $5,000 from the family
of Robert L. Galley to establish a scholarship in his memory.
The money was initially put in our checking account while
the Board tried to figure out how to satisfy the criteria
the family had in mind when they gave us the money for the
scholarship. Bob was well known for his expertise in the area
of fluid flow and the scholarship was to be awarded for a
college student's work in that area.
Several years ago the Board established a separate savings
account for this fund, but had not established the formal
criteria for awarding the funds from the account for a scholarship.
The current problem is that interest income on the account
does not generate sufficient revenue to provide a meaningful
scholarship on an annual basis. This year the Board is working
on a plan that will fund the scholarship and establish the
criteria for the award.
The primary criteria for the scholarship award are that
a paper be written and presented on some aspect of fluid flow.
We will be promoting the availability of this scholarship
to our student section and the local colleges in our area.
The winning paper will be presented at NORCAL TECH 2004 at
the California Maritime Academy on May 12th or 13th , 2004.
We will award a $500 scholarship to the student submitting
the winning paper.
The success of our first NORCAL TECH will determine the
frequency of that event in future years. If NORCAL TECH becomes
an annual event we will use that event as the location for
the presentation of the winning paper and the $500 scholarship.
Like all of the Norcal programs and projects, this project
will require volunteer time and effort to make it happen properly.
If you are interested in participating on our scholarship
committee please contact Norcal's president, Suzanne Pippin
at (800) 214-4499 x403.
